The Lives of Summer Embterns

First two weeks

First two weeks at Ember Arts have been fantastic. I am Clay’s intern which means I am working on the sales side of Ember. We visited two awesome stores that sell Acholi Beads last week, Urban Girl which is located in Seaport Village & Urban Seed which is located in Old Town (check them out if you get the chance because they are super fun and unique and sell some really neat stuff). The last two weeks have consisted of a lot of learning about the ins and outs of the business and a lot of learning about what it means to run a socially proactive business. It has been extremely rewarding working with such incredibly good-hearted people that are truly making such big differences in so many women’s lives in Northern Uganda. All of us interns have projects in the works right now that we are all excited about because we hope they will bring Ember to the next level. I currently have three different projects that I am working on and am looking forward to see how they all play out.

All of us in the office are anticipating our new shipment of jewelry from Uganda because our walls are slowly becoming empty. I’m personally excited to see all of the new little pieces of art the women have created. What I love about this jewelry is not only the fact that each bead is handmade and a little piece of art but the fact that you know that the jewelry you’re wearing has made not only the life of the woman that makes it that much better but also the lives of her family, her friends, and probably her village. That’s pretty beautiful.

I’m a pretty fortunate kid and this summer is going to be amazing. Stay tuned because we have lots of exciting things planned.

Happy summer!
